History
Tiruchirapalli, an ancient city in Tamil Nadu, stands on the River Cauvery. It was a stronghold of the Early Cholas, with Uraiyur as their capital. Uraiyur, later called 'Kozhiyur,' thrived as a trade hub during the Sangam period. In the 6th century AD, Pallava king Mahendravarman-I built the Rockfort, a cultural symbol. Pandyas, Delhi Sultanate, and Madurai Sultanate ruled it till 1736 when Chanda Sahib was conquered. The British took control in 1801, making Tiruchirappalli part of the Madras Presidency. In 1871, it had 76,530 people, becoming a key city under British rule for about 150 years until India gained independence.
