History

In 1947, when India split, Punjab was divided too. The west, with Lahore, went to Pakistan, leaving the east without a hub. India needed a new Punjab capital and considered many places before choosing Chandigarh in 1948. Designed by Le Corbusier, it aimed to symbolise modernity and shelter refugees. Completed in the '60s, it became a shared capital for Haryana and Punjab in 1966. Plans to fully integrate it into Punjab were pending by the 21st century.
