History

Thimphu is believed to have been established in the late 17th century by Lama Gyalwa Lhanampa. Initially, it was a small rural settlement in the western part of Bhutan. Thimphu became the capital of Bhutan in 1952 when the Third King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, decided to move the capital from Punakha to a more central location. This shift was part of the king's modernization efforts to centralise governance and improve communication across the country.

Overview

Thimphu is the capital and largest city of Bhutan, a small landlocked country nestled in the Eastern Himalayas. Thimphu experienced significant urbanisation and growth following its designation as the capital. It is well known for its teaching institutes and Buddhist monasteries. In recent years, Thimphu has undergone rapid modernization and development. The city has seen the introduction of new technologies, improved infrastructure, and a growing urban population.
