The history of Aurangabad goes back to the era of Buddhism which is evident from the Buddhist caves of Ajanta and Ellora (two-world heritage monuments). Aurangabad is a city with many names. In 1610, a new city Khaḍkī (modern Aurangabad) was established as the capital of the Ahmednagar Sultanate by Malik Ambar. His son Fateh Khan, changed the city’s name to Fatehnagar. Later, in 1653, Aurangzeb renamed the city to Aurangabad. In 2023, the city was again renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
