History

The city of Jhansi was earlier known as Balwant Nagar. In the 18th Century, there was a power struggle between Chhatrasal and the Mughals to take control of the region. Years later, the renowned Rani Lakshmi Bai drove the troops of the Raja of Orchha out of her Jhansi territory. She also gathered over 12,000 troops to fight against the British. The famous revolutionary Chandra Shekhar Azad was also based in this city.
