History

The city of Jhansi was earlier known as Balwant Nagar. In the 18th Century, there was a power struggle between Chhatrasal and the Mughals to take control of the region. Years later, the renowned Rani Lakshmi Bai drove the troops of the Raja of Orchha out of her Jhansi territory. She also gathered over 12,000 troops to fight against the British. The famous revolutionary Chandra Shekhar Azad was also based in this city.

Jhansi Fort: Located on the Bangira hilltop, this fort protected the Chandela Kings from the 11th until the 17th Century. The massive structure is 312 m long and 225 m wide. The fort walls are constructed from granite, and they are between 16 to 20 feet thick.

Rani Mahal: Rani Mahal translates to the "Queen's Palace". This majestic palace was also home to the great Rani Laxmi Bai.
