Backwaters of Alleppey

Every year during August, the second Saturday, Alleppey wakes up to the pulsating Nehru Cup Snake Boat Race, a water sport unique to Kerala. Snake boat races are the most significant traditional event in Alleppey. These spectacular events are usually held between August and October, and involve long thin boats powered by up to 120 oarsmen. The most famous snake boat race is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race. More

Aruthunkal:The ancient St. Sebastian Church was built by the Portuguese and is a popular centre of pilgrimage for the Christians of Kerala. The feast of St. Sebastian is held every January. This is 22 kms north of Alleppey. More

Krishnapuram Palace: This 18th century palace of the Travancore kings is built in typical Kerala style of architecture. On display are antique sculptures, paintings and bronze artifacts. The mural Gajendra Moksham, on the ground floor of the double storied palace is one of the largest of its kind in Kerala.It is the palace of Travancore kings. Mattancherry Palace: It is also known as Dutch Palace, built the Portuguese and presented to the Raja of Kochi in 1555 AD. It acquired the present name after 1663 when the Dutch carried out extensions and repairs in the palace. AT no time did the Portuguese or Dutch stay here. Its interiors are decorated with murals from the Ramayana and there are some lively displays of royal costumes and palanquins. More

Pierce Leslie Bungalow: This charming mansion was the office of Pierce Leslie & Co., coffee merchants, founded in 1862. A representative of the Fort Kochi colonial bungalow, this building reflects Portuguese, Dutch and local influences. More

Old Harbour House: This elegant old bungalow built in 1808 is in the possession of Carrit Moran & Co., renowned tea brokers, who now use it as their residence. The house was once a boat club. More

Loafer's Corner/Princess Street: One of the earliest streets to be constructed in Fort Kochi, Princess Street with its European style residences still retains its old world charm. The best view of this quaint street can be had from Loafer's Corner, the traditional meeting place and hangout of the jovial fun loving people of the area. More

Vasco House: Believed to have been the residence of Vasco da Gama, this is one of the oldest Portuguese residences in Fort Kochi. Built in the early sixteenth century, Vasco House sports the typical European glass paned windows and balcony cum verandahs characteristic of the times.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary: Located in the banks of the Vembanad Lake, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, an ornithologist's paradise, is a favorite haunt of migratory birds like Siberian stroke, egret, darter, heron and teal. Other common varieties like the woodpecker, skylark, crane, water hens and parrots can also be spotted here. A cruise along the Vemband lake is the best way to experience the sanctuary. 

Kuttanad: It is known as the rice bowl of Kerala. With a vast stretch of greenery Kuttanad is situated in the heart of backwaters. The scenic countryside of Kuttanad with its shimmering waterways also has a rich crop of banana, tapioca cassava and yam and the farming is done 1.5 to 2 mts below sea level. Inland waterways, which flow above land level, are amazing features of this region. A house boat cruise through the backwaters of Kuttanad is a heavenly experience.

Pathiramanal: Sands of Midnight is the literal meaning of the term Pathiramanal. There is an interesting story behind its name. A young Brahmin dived into the Vembanad Lake to perform his evening ablutions and the water made the way for land to rise from below, thus creating this beautiful island. This tiny island on the backwaters is a favorite haunt of hundreds of rare migratory birds from different parts of the world.

Q S T and R Block Kayal: These regions are wonders of the indigenous agricultural engineering know -how of Kerala and remind the visitor of the famous dikes of Holland. Extensive areas of land have been reclaimed from the backwaters and are protected by dikes built all around. Here cultivation and habitation are made possible four to ten feet below sea level. A leisurely cruise along the canals that surround these kayals is a memorable experience.

Chavara Bhavan: Chavara Bhavan is the ancestral home of the Blessed Father Chavara Kuriakose Elias. It is now an important pilgrim center where thousands of devotees gather for praying and receiving favours. One can reach this Holy Shrine only by boat. A 250 years old beacon of light is kept here in its original and primitive form.
