East India is where the states of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Orissa reside. Nestled between North India and Northeast India, the region shares many cultural and linguistic characteristics with Bangladesh. Most of India's steel industry is concentrated in the areas of Bihar and West Bengal because of the proximity to coal and iron ore.
Durga and Jagannath are particularly popular deities in this region. Puri is the eastern center for pilgrimage in Hinduism, and Bhubaneswar is considered to be the city of temples.
West Bengal's capital Kolkata, the capital of British India till 1911, is the biggest metropolis and economically dominant city of the region. However, the mid-sized cities of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri in Orissa, and Bihar's capital Patna, were historically more prominent in the anceint and medieval periods.
