Shimla

Shimla Night view

Shimla (originally called Simla), the capital of the state of Himachal Pradesh, located in the north-west Himalayas, is often referred to as the 'Queen of Hills'. The city is draped in forests of pine, rhododendron and oak, experiences pleasant summers and cold, snowy winters. Famous for its buildings styled in Tudorbethan and neo-gothic architecture reminiscent of the colonial era, it is well-connected to Chandigarh (the nearest major city), and New Delhi, the national capital. The city is named after the goddess Shyamala Devi, an incarnation of the Hindu Goddess Kali.

The biggest industry in Shimla is hotel, travel and tourism. Besides being the ultimate summer retreat it remains an ideal spot for adventure sports. Tourists can go in for the various treks to the Kullu valley or indulge in trout fishing at the Pabbar River. The more adventurous may ski at the Narkanda and Kufri from January to mid-March. The nine-hole golf course at Naldehra is also a major draw for the tourists. This beautiful hill resort also offers a lot for those who would like to indulge in a shopping spree. The Mall is the place to check out for the best in the garment and textile industry. Here the State emporium offers Himachali (local) handicrafts and handloom items. Places to see include Jakhu Temple, Dorje Drag Monastery, The Ridge, Christ Church, Lower Bazaar and the Viceregal Lodge.
